"If the United States demonstrates genuine intent and good faith in its actions, the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) remains a reachable goal," stated Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian during a press briefing in New York. He expressed optimism about the possibility of salvaging the 2015 nuclear deal.

Amirabdollahian noted that recent developments, such as the exchange of prisoners between Iran and the US, offer hope for progress. He emphasized that if the US abandons paradoxical approaches and demonstrates a sincere commitment, reaching an agreement for all parties to return to the JCPOA and lift sanctions against Iran is within reach.

During the UN General Assembly, the foreign minister participated in a meeting with an American think tank that included former US politicians. In this context, he candidly addressed the US's past wrongdoings in its dealings with Iran and the JCPOA. He also highlighted the Biden administration's continuation of its predecessor's policy of non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The United States reinstated sanctions against Iran in 2018 after withdrawing from the JCPOA, an international agreement that involved Iran and several world powers. The agreement aimed to keep sanctions lifted in exchange for Iran implementing certain voluntary changes in its nuclear energy program.

Under pressure from the United States, the European Union has aligned itself with US sanctions against Iran since the US's departure from the JCPOA.
